Four years ago, I was trying to start a business, and could use all the help I could get. I desperately needed some advice, but if you have ever tried to hire a mentor, you know they don’t come cheap. I was so happy when I learned that there is a site where volunteer mentors and mentees are matched. You get their knowledge and experience, and don’t have to pay a dime.
It’s easy to get started. You set up a profile and choose the area you need help in. Then, browse the mentor directory and if you think it is a good fit, send an email and ask to be mentored. There is very wide range of business mentors specializing in services ranging from writing and editing, to web technology, and just about any field you’re interested in.
I set up my profile in 2012 and I was contacted by a mentor. My business goal at the time was to do some affiliate marketing, but through our mentoring sessions, that idea was quickly ruled out. I discovered a love of life coaching and writing, and my mentor worked with me for 6 months.
There are a few expectations once you are matched. Mentors provide support and guidance, but are not able to connect you to customers or financing. You need to be actively working in your business, and follow through with mentoring commitments. Show up for appointments or call ahead to reschedule.
I hope you find your perfect mentoring match to make your goals a reality.
